Item Details
Description
Fascinating and rare c. 1910 mounted photograph of a large group of older Confederate veterans in front of a brick building. The men wear ribbons in the style of military reunions. The photographer’s embossed name and location may be a clue to their identity: Launder’s, Davis, I.T.

Indian Territory, the predecessor to the state of Oklahoma, was a chaotic place during the Civil War. Confederates, many of whom belonged to the various Native American tribes living within the territory, controlled various federal forts there until 1862. Union victories led to northern control of the territory for most of the remainder of the war, although their troops were harassed nearly constantly by Confederates under Gen. Stand Watie.

Rare view of Confederate veterans on the western frontier.
