Cabinet card photograph of “Black Coal” cradling a carbine rifle. Black Coal was a prominent leader of the Northern Arapaho tribe during the latter half of the 19th century. Serving as an ambassador of sorts for the Northern Arapaho, he helped lead the tribe’s transition from free-roaming life/resistance to alliance with the United States.
