Description
Pre-Columbian, Ecuador or Colombia, Sinu (Zenu) culture, 800 to 1200 CE. An intriguing pottery vessel on the form of a human head – the narrow eyes suggest a calm demeanor or even deceased person. The Sinu tribe lived in the inland delta along the modern-day Colombian coast of the Caribbean Sea. Their famous goldsmithing talents drew the Spaniards to their region; however, they also created a wide range of intriguing ceramic sculptures that skillfully depict stylized anthropomorphic beings. Pottery figures and vessels were placed in burial offerings in tombs, perhaps as guardians or companions for the deceased - it is possible this vessel served a similar function and held an offering of food or other ritualistic items. Size: 6.5" Diameter x 7.5" H (16.5 cm x 19 cm)
