October 7, 1814-Dated War of 1812 Period, Newspaper titled, "The Weekly Messenger", Boston, Reports on the Battle on Lake Champlain (a.k.a. Battle of Plattsburgh), Commodore Thomas Macdonough on the Great American Naval Victory & the Defense of Fort McHenry, Massachusetts, Very Fine.
Important and historic War of 1812 Period Newspaper measures about 13.75" x 20.25", 4 pages. A scarce & significant War of 1812 newspaper with half of the front page devoted to the Battle on Lake Champlain (aka Battle of Plattsburgh), the great American Naval victory which ended the British invasion of the Northern U.S. including the Official Account, the report of Commodore Thomas Macdonough to the Secretary of the Navy. It Lists of killed and wounded on board the U.S. squadron on Lake Champlain; British accounts, etc. The back page has the official report regarding the British bombardment and American defense of Fort McHenry, located in Baltimore Harbor, in the form of Lt. Col. Armistead's Letter to the Secretary of War, James Monroe. *Note - that magnificent action gave rise to Francis Scott Key writing the "Star Spangled Banner" (not included). Also on the back page is a letter from General Andrew Jackson at Mobile, Ala., to Tenn. Gov. Blount, regarding the British in Florida, and their plans to conquer Louisiana. Gen. Jackson asks that more troops be sent to him. Horizontal fold, small holes at left edge from previous binding.
