U.S. Model 1833 Dragoon Enlisted Man's Saber and Scabbard for Massachusetts,
Nathaniel P. Ames, Springfield, Massachusetts, c. 1835.
Brass hilt, the down turned quillon stamped 'MS,' two branches on the knuckle bow with slot at the top connecting to a stepped pommel with back strap, black leather covered grip with twisted brass wire wrapping; curved single-edge blade with false edge at the tip and pipe back, the right side etched near the hilt 'N.P. Ames/Cutler/Springfield/18[--],' and on the left side of the blade 'United States Dragoons,' with leather washer at top of blade; iron scabbard with two suspension rings, the drag stamped 'MS' on the right side and the left side stamped with corroded inspector's initials.
Blade lg. 34, overall lg. 39 3/8 in.

Condition
Brass hilt toned to a deep yellow, the knuckle bow and branches slightly deformed, leather grip wrapping has an area of restoration just below the pommel, hilt is slightly loose on the blade tang; blade has overall light gray mottling and minor pitting towards the tip, 'United' in 'United Stated Dragoons' is very faint; scabbard is mostly toned to deep brown and has several dents above the drag.
