Durante il boom economico e grazie all’arrivo della televisione, si iniziano a sognare le agiatezze della vita di Hollywood. l’ottimismo dilagante e la voglia di vivere incentivano il mercato delle auto sportive specialmente sul mercato americano. In quegli anni piccole spider europee vivono un periodo particolarmente felice: importate per la prima volta dai reduci della Seconda Guerra mondiale, sono impiegate sia nelle gare dello SCCA sia come auto quotidiane.
In questo clima, l’importatore Alfa Romeo Max Hoffman chiese alla Casa del Biscione di produrre la versione Spider della neo-introdotta Giulietta, in modo da riuscire a conquistare il pubblico americano grazie alla sua linea sportiva ed elegante. Nacque così la Giulietta Spider, subito ribattezzata la fidanzata d’Italia per via della sua popolarità, piacevolezza di guida e linea accattivante. equipaggiata da un motore a quattro cilindri in linea longitudinale da 1.290 cm3 di cilindrata erogante 65 Cv di potenza (80 Cv dal 1958), che permetteva alla vettura di raggiungere la velocità massima di 155 km/h (165 dal 1958) era fra le sportive più belle sul mercato. La seconda serie fu introdotta nel 1959 e si differenziava rispetto alla prima per via del passo allungato di 50mm: tale scelta fu adottata per uniformare la Spider alle altre varianti della Giulietta al fine di ridurre i costi di produzione. Per via di questa modifica i lamierati della Spider vennero ridisegnati, così come l’hard top e la capote.
Questa Giulietta Spider è stata prodotta il 7 novembre del 1960 e consegnata il 26 maggio del 1961 a Genova e li sembra essere rimasta fino a quando non ha cambiato provincia di residenza nel 1972, dov’è stata immatricolata con la targa Roma che mantiene tutt’ora. Negli anni 80 la vettura è stata sottoposta ad un cambio motore con uno analogo del tipo AR 00111, che fu eseguito dall’AFRA che fatturò regolarmente l’intervento al proprietario di allora. Dagli archivi, questa Giulietta risulta nata con un motore Tipo 00102. Dal 2005 questa Giulietta è nella stessa proprietà, che l’ha usata e manutenuta fino ad oggi in perfetta forma.
Questa Giulietta non ha mai subito un restauro integrale e si presenta in buone condizioni di uso con un intervento di verniciatura eseguito circa 20 anni fa. La proprietà ha tenuto un registro di tutte i lavori svolti dal 2010 ad oggi. In particolar modo, la vettura è stata sottoposta nel 2010 e 2011 ad un rifacimento degli interni, che sono stati portati al loro colore di origine e ad una sostituzione dei fondi poggia piedi. Nel 2011, la vettura è stata iscritta ASI.
Dal 2019 ad oggi questa Giulietta ha subito un intervento all’impianto frenante, revisione del carburatore, cambio olio e relativi filtri, revisione dei cilindretti freni posteriori ed è stata sottoposta a regolare revisione.
Usabile, bella e dal fascino intramontabile, questa Giulietta Spider è il perfetto mix fra usabilità, collezionabilità e storia.

Italy’s sweetheart, timeless classic



During the economic boom and thanks to the arrival of television, people began to dream of the comforts of Hollywood life. Rampant optimism and zest for life stimulated the market for sports cars, especially in the American market. In those years, small European spiders experienced a particularly happy period: first imported by World War II veterans, they were used both in SCCA races and as everyday cars.
In this atmosphere, Alfa Romeo importer Max Hoffman asked Alfa Romeo to produce a Spider version of the newly-introduced Giulietta, in order to win over the American public with its sporty and elegant lines. And so the Giulietta Spider was born, immediately renamed the 'Sweetheart of Italy' because of its popularity, driving pleasure and attractive lines. Equipped with a 1,290 cc inline-four engine with 65 hp (80 hp since 1958), which allowed the car to reach a top speed of 155 km/h (165 since 1958), it was among the most beautiful sports cars on the market. The second series was introduced in 1959 and differed from the first in that the wheelbase was lengthened by 50 mm: this choice was adopted to standardise the Spider with the other Giulietta variants in order to reduce production costs. Because of this modification, the Spider's sheet metal was redesigned, as were the hard top and soft top.
This Giulietta Spider was produced on 7 November 1960 and delivered on 26 May 1961 to Genoa, and it appears to have remained there until it changed provinces in 1972, where it was registered with the Roma number plate that it still retains today. In the 1980s the car underwent an engine change with a similar one of type AR 00111, which was carried out by AFRA, which regularly invoiced the owner at the time for the work. According to the archives, this Giulietta was born with a Type 00102 engine. Since 2005, this Giulietta has been in the same ownership, which has used and maintained it until today in perfect shape.
This Giulietta has never undergone a full restoration and is in good used condition with a paint job carried out about 20 years ago. The owner has kept a record of all work carried out from 2010 to the present day. In particular, in 2010 and 2011, the car underwent a refurbishment of the interior, which was brought back to its original colour, and a replacement of the footrest bottoms. In 2011, the car was registered with the ASI.
From 2019 to the present day, this Giulietta has undergone work on the braking system, carburettor overhaul, oil change and filters, overhaul of the rear brake cylinders and has been regularly serviced.
Usable, beautiful and with timeless appeal, this Giulietta Spider is the perfect mix of usability, collectability and history.
