**First Time At Auction**

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 3rd to 4th century CE. A large free-blown translucent glass cup with wheel cut lines encircling the rim and base. Translucent glass was highly desirable for Romans, because of the wonder that transparent yet solid objects held. Perfecting colorless glass, was painstaking as the tiniest impurity could color the end result. Untreated Roman glass was natuarlly an aqua hue, but the addition of antimony or manganese oxidede would act as a "decolourant." It is easy to imagine a Roman citizen drinking wine from this timeless style of cup which is very similar to glass tumblers of today! Size: 3.5" Diameter x 3.25" H (8.9 cm x 8.3 cm)
