Rara edizione originale. Dopo la pubblicazione degli Essais nel 1580, Montaigne soggiornò sei mesi a Roma, Il manoscritto del suo diario fu trovato per caso nel 1770 dall’Abate de Prunis, negli archivi dell’antico castello di Montaigne. Montaigne compie un viaggio in Italia tra il 1580 e il 1581: scende in Italia attraversando Trento, Verona, Vicenza, Padova e Venezia; poi Ferrara, Bologna, Firenze e Siena, fino a raggiungere Roma. Fin ad un certo punto il diario di viaggio è scritto in francese. Quando però arriva a Bagni di Lucca, dove prende le acque, si diverte a passare all’italiano, lingua che conosce per le sue letture. Sulla via del ritorno, per Parma e Piacenza, diretto a Milano a tappe forzate, poiché aveva ricevuto la nomina a sindaco di Bordeaux, passa la frontiera al Moncenisio, è solo allora che riprende a scrivere in francese le ultime pagine del diario. Nel Diario sono descritti con cura gli ambienti, i paesaggi, le accoglienze, i caratteri delle popolazioni e perfino i riti, i cibi, le feste, le costumanze, la bellezza delle donne e dei luoghi, senza trascurare gli inevitabili disagi che si presentano. Il viaggio di Montaigne è desiderio di conoscenza e di nuove esperienze ma anche più prosaicamente di cure per i suoi malanni grazie alle acque termali più rinomate del tempo. Montaigne, con una visione essenzialmente documentaria e persino utilitaristica del viaggio, rappresenta un viaggiatore ben diverso dal viaggiatore romantico dell’800 che sarà spinto verso il Grand Tour da una ricerca sentimentale e mitica.Brunet III, 1841 // Graesse IV, 581 // Thieme-Becker, XXIX, 319.

Rare firstl edition. After the publication of the Essais in 1580, Montaigne stayed six months in Rome. The manuscript of his diary was casually found in 1770 by the Abbot de Prunis, in the archives of the ancient castle of Montaigne. However, when he arrives in Bagni di Lucca, where he takes the waters, he enjoys switching to Italian, a language he knows for his readings of him.
