Description

Rare first printing of a very desirable map, with the most decorative border and very fine and vivid coloring. This is from the first printing of S. A. Mitchell Jr’s initial atlas, published only for the first couple of months in 1860. He quickly revised the maps after March of that year to move the plate numbers from within the map frame and place them outside, thus making them page numbers. It’s the one thing that identifies this map as the rare first printing. (See first part of description of Lot 1). In 1859, Oregon became a state; in the process Washington gained land from Oregon east of today's eastern border (basically most of Idaho). The map shows Washington in this state with an inverted "L" shape which included a sizeable portion of today’s Montana and all of Idaho. Nebraska Territory extends all the way to the Canadian border. Shows the Oregon Trail, here labeled the Emigrant Route. Oregon has today's borders with the eastern region unorganized and labeled as unexplored. Shows forts, rivers, lakes, topographical features and more. Small spot at right margin. Tiny bit of tanning at extreme edges of paper. An exceptional, rare map. 10.75 x 13.25
