From the first printing of Samuel Augustus Mitchell Jr’s New General Atlas, was published in only the first few months of 1860. No one seems to know just how many copies were printed of this now rare atlas, but examples of its various maps are extremely hard to locate. Maps from the first printing differ from the second issue later that year by the first-state maps bearing the plate number inside the map frame and the decorative borders being either slightly different or more finely delineated. This is a lovely engraved example with exceptionally bright original hand coloring. This attractive and historical map depicts the new State of Minnesota (which had just been admitted to the Union in 1858) and the “Dacotah” Territory. Counties are shown in vivid contrasting colors. Governor Stevens Northern Pacific Railroad Route traced to the northwest. Topographical features with descriptions are shown. Early railroad and water routes are identified. Indian tribes are named and located throughout the map. A very informative view of the area just prior to the onset of the Civil War. Small paper repair just outside the frame near the bottom right. Few light and small spots at the left and bottom margins. Some light toning at the edges. 10.75 x 13.25
