Lewis Morris Excellent ALS Re: Irish Immigrants & Market Business Rev War Dated

A lengthy letter from Declaration signer Lewis Morris to his son, Col. Lewis Morris in Charleston. 2pp of a bifolium, measuring 7.25" x 9", n.p., n.d. [ca. 1782-3]. Morris writes of a recent sickness affecting Irish immigrants and of market business. Although undated, the letter was likely written around 1782-1783 because Ann Elliot is mentioned, but the couple has not yet married. The letter has flattened mail folds, with a loss to the address page. Ink ghosting throughout. Boldly signed by Morris, and overall very good.

In part:
"Yesterday for the first time since the sickness I have been to New York. The disorder has made terrible havoc among the inhabitants but it has fallen most directly on the immigrants from Ireland. I am told a ship that arrived with 450 not more than 50 are spared. Some of the principle inhabitants are taken off but not many. The reason you have not heard from me in some time I need not tell you was owing to the sickness. Mrs. Huger in her last letter refers me for more important particulars which letter has not come to hand…she need not be under any apprehension for her brother Daniel. He has too much honor to do anything that would give her pain. He is really a very fine, manly boy and.. he will be an honor and comfort to his good mother… I was in NYork I saw in the market part of a very fine ox the Salters had refused to take anything for you as he was so full but I persuaded him to take a Barrel of Beef for you. Let Mrs. Huger have part and she can repay you when I send hers by the next good opportunity…The Stonecutter here says he ordered your steps from Philadelphia... Your frontispiece and flagstones I expect will be ready soon…Billy and James both say they will write you so that I refer you to their letters for politics. Sally joins me in our regards to Miss Elliott, Mrs. Huger and all the good family…"

Lewis Morris (1726-1798) was an American Founding Father who signed the U.S. Declaration of Independence as a delegate to the Continental Congress from New York. When signing the Declaration, Morris was warned by his brother, Staats Morris, of the consequences that would follow his signing of the radical document, to which Morris replied, "Damn the consequences. Give me the pen."
