BIOGRAPHY:
Born in Tula into the family of minor gentry, Miasoyedov studied at the Imperial Academy under Neff and Markov. In 1862 he won the large gold medal there for his painting "The flight of Grigorii Otrepiev" (from Pushkin's Boris Godunov), which is still preserved in the Museum of the Imperial Academy. He reached the status of full Academician in 1870 when he returned to Russia after some years spent in Europe, and then became a founding member of the Peredvizhniki (The Wanderers), and exhibited with them for the rest of his life. He is a leading exponent of the Wanderers' art, using a highly technical, polished academic style to depict scenes from peasant life, of which the offered lot is an excellent example.
