Description
**Originally Listed At $500**
Southeast Asia, Thailand, Ayutthaya Period, ca. 15th to 18th century CE. This is a beautiful and serene cast leaded-brass Buddha head with a glimmering gilt surface. The visage exudes a wonderful sense of peace and tranquility, with downcast eyes, arched brows, a naturalistic nose, full lips, and stretched earlobe, symbolizing Buddha's all-hearing powers, benevolence, and wisdom. Atop the head is Buddha's distinctive curled coiffure composed of dozens of small nodules indicative of hair, with a prominent, pointed "flaming" ushnisha. Great remains of gilt are spread across the surface, suggesting this head was opulently adorned when first created. The weathered and fragmentary head of this Buddha has an aged and calm energy. Size: 2.25" L x 2" W x 4.5" H (5.7 cm x 5.1 cm x 11.4 cm); 7" H (17.8 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: Whisnant Gallery, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA acquired prior to 2000
