Description
**Originally Listed At $250**

Jack Hillier (British, 1912-1995). "Japanese Prints & Drawings from the Vever Collection" Published by Sotheby Parke Bernet, London, 1976. A three-volume 1st edition set with its matching gilt lettered cloth covered slipcase, cataloguing the major collection amassed by Henri Vever. Each volume is bound in light and dark brown cloth stamped in gilt, with spine lettering and top edges in gilt as well, and a pictorial dust jacket. Vever was "a prominent Parisian jeweller and one of the earliest protagonists of Japonism" (dust jacket). He began accumulating this collection in 1880; however, by the 1920s sold many of the works to a Japanese industrialist, and most ended up in the Tokyo National Museum. The occupation by France during WWI led to the disappearance of this collection until Sotheby's announced a two-date sale in 1974 and 1975. These volumes comprise not only the prints and drawings sold by Sotheby's in these auctions, but also those that were not to be sold, many of which were quite rare and were seldom, if ever published. The set includes a total of 979 items illustrated with approximately 69 in color, arranged chronologically. Ideal for any Japanese art collector, an extensively illustrated, 3-volume set featuring the remarkable Vever collection of Japanese prints and drawings by art historian Jack Hillier. Size of slipcase: 10" L x 5.25" W x 13.875" H (25.4 cm x 13.3 cm x 35.2 cm)

Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection, aquired before 2010
