Description
Edwin Lamasure, Jr. (American, 1867-1916). Watercolor on paper. SLR. Dimensions: 18" x 28". Framed under glass: 26 1'2" x 36 1/2". This landscape painting is most likely the environs of Round Hill, Virginia, the home of the artist from 1896 until his death in 1916. He commuted to his studio in Washington, DC to work, earning a reputation as a noted landscapist. He was primarily self-taught, using watercolors. Lamasure worked for the Bureau of Engraving early in his life providing him with the rendering skill evident in all his paintings. In Washington, he was active in art clubs and exhibited regularly at the Veerhoff Gallery and with the Washington Water Color Society. Much of his subject matter was from the environs of Virginia and Maryland, and he spent much time in the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Chesapeake Bay region. He also painted historical buildings such as The Washington Monument, Mount Vernon and Monticello. The artist was commissioned by the Osborne Company to paint twelve scenes of the construction of the Panama Canal, most of them used on calendars, but the circumstances of the commission are unknown.
