This is the first "Official Pass" to the Hauptmann trial that we have handled.
The 20-month-old son of noted aviator Charles Lindbergh was kidnapped on March 1, 1932, and found dead on May 12, 1932. Bruno Richard Hauptmann was arrested for the crime and had a trial lasting from Jan. 2 to Feb. 3, 1935. He was put to death on April 3, 1936. Around age four Maurice Sendak became aware of the kidnapping, including seeing the front page photo of the first edition of “Daily News” w/baby’s remains, leading to a lifelong concern over children’s vulnerability and fascination w/the Lindbergh case. Sendak's worry as a young child that he too might be kidnapped, manifested itself in his book "Outside Over There" published in 1981 telling the story of a young girl who rescues her baby sister who has been stolen by goblins.
