Wright Bros. Archive of Newspapers Reporting on Historic Flights
A group of five newspapers reporting on the historic and scientific achievements of the Wright Brothers, together with one photograph that is a copy of a contact print. The newspapers date from January 17, 1904 to October 9, 1909, and come from a variety of different publications: The Dallas Morning News, Harper's Weekly, The Youth's Companion, and Scientific American. Of varying sizes. Covering a performance of the Wright Brothers' Aerostat, their World Record Flight, and the first flight at Fort Myer. Accompanying the newspapers is a 10" x 8" photograph (a copy of a contact print) of Orville Wright's first flight at Kitty Hawk on December 17, 1903. Wilbur Wright can be seen at the side of the plane, keeping it balanced. The newspapers have varying degrees of toning, soiling, and wear. Flattened folds, with edge chipping and some separations. The photograph has some edge toning and curled edges. Light wear and soiling. Please refer to the photographs for further condition information.
Includes the following:
1. "The Dallas Morning News", Dallas, dated January 17, 1904. With a large article entitled "The Machine That Flies: Performance of the Wright Brothers' Aerostat Gives Promise of Success, Details of the Machine." With illustrations of the flight.
2. "Harpers' Weekly", New York, dated October 9, 1909. Volume LIII, No. 2755. With the front page filled with a large image captioned "A New King of Gull in New York Harbor. Wilbur Wright, who was under contract to give demonstrations with his aeroplane during the Hudson-Fulton celebration, made a most spectacular flight on September 29th, when he circled the State of Liberty in New York Harbor, and returned to the starting point on Governors Island without mishap, reaching a speed of fifty miles an hour."
3. "The Youth's Companion, New England Edition", Boston, dated October 1, 1908. The front page is taken up with three photos captions "The Wright Brothers' Aeroplane in a World Record Flight" and "Orville Wright at Fort Myer, Va…"
4. "Scientific American", New York, dated January 2, 1909. Volume C-No. 1. Page 6 has an article on "Aeronautics" which mentions several achievements of the brothers.
5. "Scientific American", New York, dated September 12, 1908. Volume XCIX-No. 11. Page 5 have an article on the first flight of the Wright aeroplane at Fort Myer.
