Description
CHARLES S. FERRIN (1892-1976) was a highly-decorated Army brigadier general, who most notably served as the Provost Marshal of Tokyo after war's end and charged with the security of the International Military Tribunal, Far East, during the incarceration of the Japanese war criminals. During World War II, he was an Assistant Plans Officer at Pearl Harbor and the Artillery Commander of the 27th Infantry Division which fought with distinction at Eniwetok, Saipan and Okinawa. Pair of flags personally owned and used by Brigadier General Charles S. Ferrin, almost certainly during World War II and while serving as Provost Marshal of Tokyo. The first is a two-sided rayon 48-star American flag, 49 x 35 in. with additional gold cloth fringe about three sides, 48 embroidered stars, with Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot cloth tag within the hoist. The second flag is Ferrin's one-star brigadier general's, near identical construction, 49 x 35 in. rayon with identical fringe at three sides, a single star carefully sewn at center, and also bearing a Quartermaster Depot tag. Both flags are in very good condition, the American flag exhibiting a little sunning. Flags belonging to prominent American generals are rarely seen.
