Description
A Suki carrying bag, Suki people, Middle Fly River, Western Province, Papua New Guinea.Of classical form the bags with geometric designs woven into the basic shape in raised fiber and carefully pigmented in shades of red, yellow, black and white.Of typical form, these rare examples illustrate the type and style of Suki weaving that was traded down the Fly River as far as Kiwai island. While the Suki are linguistically different than the Anim speaking peoples to the West, this type of embroidery is virtually identical and was almost certainly influenced by them. Very similar bags collected prior to 1913 are illustrated by Landtman (Landtmen 1935). Acquired by Marc Seidler from George Craig, C. 1980; field collected by Craig C. 1966. The bag Body measures 28.5 x 13 inches.
