Description
A fine Suki womens fiber skirt. Middle Fly River, Western Province, Papua New Guinea. Of simple form, the skirt made of shredded plant fiber and elaborately tied and worked to cover the pubic area. Skirts of this type were worn by Suki women to cover the pubic area and fell into disuse by the mid-20th century. Some examples such as this were kept as keepsakes or heirlooms. The weaving patterns are similar to those of the rain-capes or carrying bags, traded all throughout the Trans-Fly region. A lovely and old example of this rare type of object. Acquired by Marc Seidler from Ken Brown, C. 1981. Skirt body measures 18 x 10 inches.
