Description
A Fly River hafted stone club, Middle Fly River, Western Province, Papua New Guinea. The club of star-shaped form with four points, and made of a coarse-grained stone, painted with red, white, black and yellow designs. While clubs of this type are often attributed to the Kukukuku people north of the Papuan Gulf, the coarseness of the stone and the fact that this was field collected by George Craig on the Fly River, point to a point of origin somewhere in the Middle or Upper Fly River; likely north of Lake Murray. The painting on the head of the club would indicate that the club was in ceremonial use at the time of collection. Acquired by Marc Seidler from George Craig, C. 1980; field collected by Craig prior to 1966. The Club Measures 42 inches tall Mace head is 7.5 inches across at widest point. There is no display stand included.
