Description
A Fine and rare Highland Ok Cuirass. Highland Ok people, Star Mountains, Sandaun Province; Papua New Guinea. Of typical form, the armor made as two discreet sections, the lower section of tightly woven rattan folded over and sewn while the upper half displays a larger weave and a “hem” with sewn edges. The Highland Ok people inhabit the very Northern Border of Western Province and the Star Mountain area in Sandaun province. This includes many of the Oksapmin language group peoples of the region, including the more well-known Telefolmin. Armor of this type was used in battle as a means of protecting the abdomen against arrows shot from far distances, as well as stab wounds. While related to the Cuirasses of the Lowland Ok, this type of Cuirass seems more formally related to those of the Dani and other Highlands groups.Acquired by Marc Seidler in the Telefolmin area, C. 1980s. Measures 20 inches tall x 18 inches wide.
