Description
Two bark cloth skirts, Maisin people, Oro province; Papua New Guinea.Of beaten mulberry bark tapa, the cloths painted with elaborate curvilinear designs on a white field with black highlighting. Excellent condition.Tapas from Oro province are worn in public dislays and also can be used in the home. These cloths have earlier, more fluid designs than most examples that are more recent. Later examples depict the characteristic patterns in a more pronounced linear and compartmentalized way. The lack of rigidity of these examples points to an earlier origin. Acquired by Marc Seidler c. 1980’s
