Description
A Fine Nkuma Yena figure. Nkuma people, Washkuk Hills, East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea. Of typical form, the large elongated head atop a long tapering post, the face bisected blackened, the brows missing the white infill, the nose long and with small smiling mouth. Fine old example with expected encrustation from traditional storage.Yena figures are used in the lowest of three rites related to the fertility of the yam harvest on traditional Washkuk culture. Art from the Nkuma is more cubistic and abstracted geometrically than that of the neighboring Kwoma people. Acquired by Marc Seidler from Lynda Cunningham, C. 1981. Measures 43 inches tall x 9 inches wide.
