Description
A Fine Abelam figure, Abelam people; Maprik Hills, East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea. Of classical form, the figure with rounded head and pointed chin, the body with arms about the torso, the hips ide and standing on integral base, a second head rising above with bird-like motifs. The whole with red, yellow, white and back pigmentation. Figures of this type known as Ngwalndu, were used to decorate the Abelem men’s house during initiatory cycles for men. This particular figure is quite intact with all original pigment. During the initiation, the men’s house would often be decorated with a multitude of carvings and painted bark panels in bright colors.Acquired by Marc Seidler from Lynda Cunningham, C. 1981 in Papua New Guinea. The sculpture measures 51.5 inches tall x 8 inches wide.
