Description
A Fine Nkuma Yena figure. Nkuma people, Washkuk Hills, East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea. Of typical form, the large rounded head atop a long tapering post, the face bisected horizontally with red pigment, the brows white, the nose long and small smiling mouth. Yena figures were used in the lowest of three rites related to the fertility of the yam harvest in traditional Washkuk culture. Art from the Nkuma is more cubistic and abstracted geometrically than that of the neighboring Kwoma people. Acquired by Marc Seidler from Lynda Cunningham, C. 1981. Measures 40 inches tall x 14 inches wide.
