Needlework Decorative Sampler Including Lobster & Bird
c. 1840 Early American Vintage Hand-Wrought Alphabets design Needlework Sampler on Cloth Linen, Including a Decorative Lobster & Bird, Framed, About Fine.
This Needlework Sampler is likely from the mid-to-late 1800s and measures 12.5" square (by sight) and professionally modern wooden framed to an overall size of 14" x 14" for display. These Samplers allowed young women to practice their craft but have become highly collected for their social history and window to the past. This example features several full alphabets in various scripts and sizes, some using what appears to be metallic finish thread in gold, silver and bronze hues. No date or place, yet most likely New England given the highly unusual decorative stitched LOBSTER! Also features various images and motifs including a lobster in the upper right. A bit faded from display, this Sampler is still fully legible and very interesting due to the various imagery. Some minor thread separation noted, including a 1" hole in the upper center and another slightly smaller around the letter "V" just left of center. Overall, in nice pleasing condition, professionally framed to be ready to hung on display.
