1844 "Minnesota" Hand-Wrought Needlework Memorial Tribute Sampler by "Laura Wyatt - 1844 Minnesota"
1844-Dated, Hand-Wrought Naive, Folk Art style Needlework Memorial Tribute Sampler by "Laura Wyatt - 1844 Minnesota" Framed, Fine.
A simple Naive, Folk Art style and roughly made "Memorial" Sampler, which measures 16.5" x 9.5" (by sight) and is wood framed to an overall size of 19.5" x 12.5". It appears to be a widow's poignant tribute to her fallen husband. Dated 1844 by "Laura Wyatt" this sampler reads, in full: "I hear the soldiers battle cry as one by one they lay and die. In memory of Col. Wyatt. Laura Wyatt, 1844, Minnesota." This Sampler also features partial fabric parts of an American Flag attached at the top and bottom in a display, most likely pieces of Colonel Wyatt's funeral pall. The white tightly wove cotton fabric on this sampler shows normal light age, and the dark brown thread makes for a crisp and very readable.
