Description
East Asia, China, Neolithic Period, Majiayao (also Gansu-Yangshao) culture, ca. 2300 to 2000 BCE. A set of 2 hand-built pottery jars of squat, utilitarian form with planar bases and slender handles along the corseted shoulder. One vessel features a series of broad spirals comprised of stripe-filled boxes, and the other exhibits a dense, dark motif. The Majiayao culture, also known as the Gansu-Yangshao culture, is from what is known as Gansu or Qinghai province today. Size (linear spirals): 7.875" W x 5.6" H (20 cm x 14.2 cm); (dark surfaces): 6.375" W x 5.6" H (16.2 cm x 14.2 cm)

Condition
Both vessels with minor abrasions, several petite spalls, fading to pigment, and light earthen deposits, otherwise intact and very good. Great preservation to decorative motifs. Modern felt pad beneath larger vessel.
