Description
c. 1885 Interracial Portrait of Two Gentlemen, Brooklyn.

Albumen cabinet card. Brooklyn, NY: R. Weiss. Photographer’s 1314 Bushwick Ave. imprint to mount recto and verso.

A lovely three-quarters dual portrait of two gentlemen, one Black, and one white. They both wear frock coats and stand side-by-side in the photographer’s studio. Though their identity is currently unknown, the two men’s connection and bond are palpable.

Highly unusual example that defies the prevailing conventions of early photography by portraying individuals of different races as equals.
