Western United States, California, San Jose Mission, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A large wooden spindle with spun wool fibers, which purportedly came from the San Jose Mission in Northern California. In the 1830s the mission had a robust sheep flock and a weaving workshop as part of their self-sufficient community strategy. Weaving and basketry skills the Native Californian people already possessed were unfortunately exploited by the missions, and the work of sheep husbandry, shearing, wool preparation, and weaving was carried out by the Native residents. Size: 27.75" L x 5" W (70.5 cm x 12.7 cm)
Provenance: private Alamo, California, USA collection, acquired from Mission San Jose, California, USA in the 1980s

Condition
Some wear and abrasions to wood as expected with age and use. Nice patina. Wool is probably a recent addition for presentation purposes.
