Description
ENGLISH STAFFORDSHIRE TRANSFER-PRINTED ELEPHANT / INDIA MOTIF CERAMIC PLATES, LOT OF FIVE, each having blue transfer scene, comprising a reticulated plate featuring View in the Fort, Madura depicting a mountain with ruins and figures riding an elephant, two examples with the Mausoleum of Sultan Purveiz featuring a procession in front of an imposing domed structure, and two featuring Monopteros #1 depicting building ruins and figures with a water buffalo in foreground. Marks to underside include impressed "HERCULANEUM." and "ROGERS". Herculaneum, Liverpool, Lancashire; John Rogers & Son, Burslem; William Walsh, Burslem, England. Second quarter 19th century. 8 1/2" to 9 7/8" D.

One Mausoleum of Sultan Purveiz undamaged; reticulated plate with rim hairline, primarily visible to underside due to decoration; one Monopteros example with faint rim hairline, primarily visible to underside due to decoration, and remaining with two flakes to underside rim; one Mausoleum of Sultan Purveiz example with moderate hairline crack and two filled-in rim flakes to underside.
