Item Details
Description
Lot of 7 different. 1) Union Mill & Mining Company. One of the great Comstock check rarities. Only 5 examples currently known. This check is issued to William Sharon for $50,000 in April 1875 (over $1.3 million today). It is signed by Sharon as president and the secretary (illegible). Signature is torn off. This check is also signed on the reverse by Sharon. Red print, RN-D, San Francisco dateline. This check was issued at a critical time for the Bank of California. The Bonanza Firm had wrestled away control of the Comstock that the bank had established in the 1860s. Just 4 months after this check was issued, William Chapman Ralston would be dead, possibly by suicide. All other examples of this check known are also for huge sums of money issued to Sharon, clearly representing an internal reorganization of the company. The Union Mill & Mining Co. was the organization that managed the Bank of California's large number of Comstock mines and mills. (Fair, Flood, Mackay, & O'Brien later organized the Pacific Mill & Mining Co. to do the same for their properties). Sharon was one of the most powerful men on the Comstock, running the Bank of California for William Ralston. 2) Bacon Mill. Bank of California, RN-C. 1871. Issued to Gillig Mott & Co. (famous Gillig mining lanterns). Signed by Bonanza King mining millionaire John Mackay. 3) Bacon Mill, Bank of California. Issued in 1870 to the Bank of California. Signed by Bonanza King mining millionaire and US Senator James G. Fair. NV and US IR adhesive revenue stamps. 4) Sapphire Mill, Bank of California, 1867. Issued to Charles McCarthy. Signed by WS Hobart, a key figure in the Tahoe/Comstock lumber and water industries. NV and US IR stamps. 5) Gould & Curry Silver Mining Co., Bank of California, 1866. Issued to the Ophir Mining Co. Signed by noted and important supt. Louis Janin Jr. 6) Gould & Curry Silver Mining Co., Bank of California, 1871. Signed by CC Batterman as supt., an important Comstock mining figure. RN-C and NV adhesive revenue stamp. 7) Bank of California, Dec. 1864. Issued to DM Ross. Signed by Charles Bonner (for the Gould & Curry), namesake of the Bonner Shaft and supt. for multiple mines. US IR stamp. Virginia City Nevada 1864-1875
