Millard Fillmore Awards Inventor for Exhibit Showcased at London's World Fair

A signed document by President Millard Fillmore, awarding someone an award for an exhibit at the first World's Fair. 1p of a bifolium, measuring 7.75" x 10", Washington, D.C., dated January 31, 1853. Signed "Millard Fillmore" and addressed to Frederick Emerson of Boston. A partially-printed communication on Executive Mansion letterhead, informing Emerson that "the Jury of the Royal Commissioners connected with the Exhibition of the Works of all Nations at London" awarded him an Exhibitor's Medal, certificate, and a copy of the jury's report. Countersigned by Peter Force, Chairman of the Executive Committee. Docketing on verso "Fillmore & Force/ World's Fair."

The Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of all Nations, also known as the Great Exhibition, was held in the Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, London, from May 1 to October 15, 1851. It was the first international exhibition of manufactured products and was enormously influential in the development of many aspects of society including art and design education, international trade and relations, and even tourism. The Exhibition also was the first on a long series of World's Fairs popular in the 19th century. Frederick Emerson's invention was a "new and useful Ventilator" christened the "Injecting-Ventilator", which would introduce atmospheric air into the interiors of ships and buildings where a continuous supply of pure air was needed. He was awarded a patent for his invention on July 3, 1847.
