Millard Fillmore Signed Recess Appointment
Partially Printed Document Signed, "Millard Fillmore", as President, 1p, 16" x 11.5", Washington, November 1, 1851. Countersigned by Daniel Webster, "Danl Webster", as Secretary of State. Intact paper-covered seal at bottom left. Flattened folds, light corner wear, toning and scattered foxing, else in very good plus condition.
Fillmore appoints Nathan Sargent of Pennsylvania as the Register of the Treasury of the United States. Sargent was something of a fixture in Washington, staying close to those in power, including his friend Abraham Lincoln who he knew from Lincoln’s term in Congress. He was active in Whig, and then, Republican politics. He held several meaningful positions in Washington, including Sergeant of Arms of the House. This is a somewhat unusual document being a recess appointment to serve “until the end of the next session of the Senate and no longer”.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
