Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala culture, ca. 500 to 200 BCE. A fine standing figure of an axe god presenting a characteristically abstract form. The figure displays fused legs, a stocky abdomen, slender arms folded at the belly, and biconically drilled suspension holes through each prominent ear. The elongated head presents drilled eyes and string-cut grooves defining the nose, mouth, and prominent brows. A lovely example of figurative sculpture from ancient Mexico!
