Large Guerrero Mezcala Stone Axe God
Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero / Mezcala, ca. 500 to 200 BCE. Skillfully carved and string cut from a beautiful mottled pale greenstone, an abstract anthropomorphic figure, standing with hands held across abdominal region and separated legs. The Mezcala sculptors brilliantly used string-saw technology to differentiate facial features and limbs. The ancient artisans of this region were particularly adept at reducing the human body to simple, eloquent forms via this string cut technique. The result ironically appeals to a modernist taste for minimalism. Mezcala sculptural works are equally appealing for the inherent beauty of the stone selected by the ancients. Custom stand. Size: 2.875" W x 7" H (7.3 cm x 17.8 cm); 7.875" H (20 cm) on stand

Provenance: ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois USA, acquired prior to 1970
