Description
East Asia, Japan, Edo to Meiji era, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A pair of carved wood netsukes, one in the form of a skull with a snake and toad on top, and the other is a wood burl carved with abstract faces. The underside of the skull has a bone inlay that is signed in Japanese characters, probably the artist's name. Netsukes were used as toggles to stop the cord on which inro were suspended from the traditional sash (obi) that wraps around the kimono. Size of skull: 1.5" W x 1.5" H (3.8 cm x 3.8 cm)
Provenance: ex-collection of the late Peter Arnovick, San Francisco, California, USA, acquired before 1995

Condition
Skull netsuke has a aged and weathered surface with stable hairline fissures. Burl netsuke has a lustrous surface and intact.
