Japanese Wood and Mixed Metal Pipecase (Kiseruzutsu) with Tekkai Sennin, mid 19thc. Of Musozutsu type, decorated with the silvered and gilded metal standing figure of Tekkai Senin, one of the 8 Immortals, blowing his spirit out of his body, with the depiction of his breath incised into the wood, under a pine bough, a small figure in copper toned metal applied at the cap of the case. Tekkai is associated with medicine and capable of leaving his body for extended periods. The gourd he holds signifies his ability to transcend the body and to offer healing.
