Description
Near East / Central Asia, Iran (Persia) Empire, Qajar Dynasty, ca. late 18th to 19th century CE. A pair of cast iron mace heads used primarily in symbolic and ceremonial contexts, but based on a classic weapon known as a "gorz" that is referenced in ancient Persian texts. According to legend, King Fereydun used a bull-headed gorz to defeat a dragon - which became a popular symbol of heroism and triumph over evil. The other mace has an anthropomorphic visage with curved horns to represent a demon (jinn), which righteous kings could control and summon jinn armies! These maces became popular during the Qajar Dynasty and both have faint remains of silver inlays forming arabesque patterns, and were hollow built with vent openings created a whistling sound when swung! Condition
Indentations and abrasions to the heads. Russet patina, oxidation and mineral deposits on the surface. Small perforation to neck on demon head. Fading and losses to silver inlays. Bull head makes a low whiffling sound when swung downward.
