Description
KILLS BEAR (Mato Hota Kte), Oglala Lakota,1899. Unmounted 9 ¼ x 7 3/8 platinotype. “Kills Bear - Copyright 1900 / F.A. Rinehart, / Omaha. No1653” [in neg]
“Hota” is the Lakota word for “grey, or grizzled.” Mato Hota is a grizzly bear, much harder to confront and kill than a black bear.
He has been dressed in a painted muslin Ghost Dance shirt, undoubtedly collected by some employee at the Agency a decade earlier. The same Lakota beaded saddle drape and Ojibwa bandolier bag seen in other portraits of the series have been used to cover his “everyday” clothing. A pipe-tomahawk is held in his left hand. [4]
