Shield for dance or war attributable to the Sheyela or Cheyenne nation. Mesurements: cm 40 x 1 (inches: 15.7" x 0.4")
Period: ca. 1890 - 1910 Provenance: private European collection, before that aquired in 1998 in the Pine Ridge Reservation - South Dakota- from members of the family Moves Camp. perimeter of metal on which a raw hide has been set, with a design realised in natural black color pigment. The design depicts the Spirit of the Thunder - Wakinyan, his wings give off beams that represents the supernatural power of the thunder. The design recall also the Medicine Wheel and the Sacred Circle, with the four sections being delimited by the different parts of the bird.
