U.S. Model 1818 Noncommissioned Officer's Sword and Scabbard,
Nathan Starr, Middletown, Connecticut, c. 1819-21.
Iron hilt, narrow counter-guard with down turned quillon, flat knuckle bow connecting to a low pommel with backstrap, black leather covered grip; straight single-edge blade with false edge at the tip and single wide fuller, the top marked 'N.STARR/US/L.S./V,' leather washer at top of blade; black-painted iron scabbard with oval button and diamond attachment shield.
Blade lg. 25 3/4, overall lg. 30 7/8 in.

The U.S. Ordnance Department contracted with Nathan Starr on December 28, 1818, to produce 4,000 of these swords at a cost of $4.00 each.
Condition
Hilt toned to mottled gray, leather grip covering has a few small losses, wire wrapping is missing; blade is bright with scattered spots of light gray mottling; scabbard retains approx. 40% black paint and has a few shallow dents.
