Iron hilt, the counter-guard with down turned quillon, reverse 'P' knuckle bow connecting to a dove's head pommel with back strap, black leather covered wood grip; curved single-edge blade with false edge at the clipped tip, single wide fuller, stamped on the ricasso 'US/P/LS/N.STARR,' with leather washer at top of blade; black-painted iron hilt with two suspension rings.

The U.S. Ordnance Department contracted with Nathan Starr on December 28, 1818, to produce 10,000 cavalry sabers at the cost of $5.00 each.

Hilt toned to deep brown, most of leather grip wrapping is missing from the right side; blade is toned to deep gray/brown and has small scattered areas of thin surface oxidation, markings are strong; scabbard retains the majority of its original black paint but has areas of exposed surface oxidation.
