Oceania, Melanesia, Fiji, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A wooden pedestal dish, carved from a single piece in the form of a bird, the surface lustrous and smooth. Effigy vessels were treasured by Fijian society and were often used during ceremonies to serve yaqona (kava in Tongan), is a psychoactive beverage made from the stems and roots of the pepper bush Piper methysticum, mixed with water, then consumed to enter a relaxing trance state. Size: 10.25" L x 5.75" W x 3" H (26 cm x 14.6 cm x 7.6 cm)
