Description
Abraham Lincoln Tintype Showing Him Seated in the Famed "Brady Chair"
Tintype, 3.125" x 3.5", of President Abraham Lincoln taken on November 8, 1863 by Alexander Gardner just prior to Lincoln's departure for the dedication of the National Cemetery at Gettysburg. The photograph showcases Lincoln's long, lanky legs and depicts him seated in the famous Brady chair, formerly used in the U.S. House of Representatives. The elegant studio chair, called a "Brady chair," was discarded from the House of Representatives when it proved too narrow for the rotund congressmen. Condition of the tintype itself is virtually mint while the original leatherette case shows expected surface and edge wear.Heritage sold a similar tintype in 2006 for $9,560.
From the collection of the late great Jonathan Mann.
