Description
This map, published by Covens & Mortier of Amsterdam and designed by Frederick de Wit, shows the Mughal Empire in its entirety, from Persia in the west to Burma in the east. The map is notable for its attention to the administrative divisions of the empire, a subject rarely seen and studied. The Ganges and Indus rivers are prominently depicted, with elephants near the Ganges and a camel in Kashmir. The map is also decorative, with cherubs holding the title cartouche and one resting on the lower cartouche. A European ship sails in the Bay of Bengal and two fictitious lakes appear in the east, one in Burma and one in Tibet. The map measures 20 1/3 x 16 1/3 inches and is hand coloured and copper engraved. It is in excellent condition and its authenticity is guaranteed.
