Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca culture, ca. 200 to 400 CE. A delightful pottery bowl hand-painted with a highly abstract killer whale at the basin. Rising from a rounded base, the sloping walls are adorned with several pairs of vertical striations along the interior. Alternatively, the whale features an elongated body with protruding pectoral and dorsal fins, a forked tail, and a keyhole-shaped head with one enormous eye and rows of bared teeth. An anthropomorphic arm extends outward from the body. The killer whale was simultaneously feared and revered by the Nazca. A vibrant and wonderful example!
