Description
A Prehistoric European late Mesolithic Alpine culture, carved and polished Axe head with a petaloid silhouette, elaborated most probably with Jadeite Omphacite stone containing a heavy grain (we lack the equipment to do a proper geological test). The Thick-Butted Ax has a leveled and polished surface with some patina. Around 6,000 years ago, skilled miners dug into the mountains in the Alps to extract precious green jadeite stones. This material was shaped and polished to form axes and other tools. From there, people travelled with the axes as far as the Black Sea to the east and Scotland in the north-west. These items pre-date the La Tene celtic culture. Provenance: Private collector, New Jersey USA.
Dimensions: L 3 3/4 in. All measurements are approximate.
