Item Details
Description
Native American, Northern United States, Great Lakes region, Iroquois / Seneca / Ojibwe, ca. 1950s CE. A hand-made vintage canoe model made from birchbark over a cedar / spruce wood frame with black pitch. Unlike some models, this boat seems to have been made by someone with knowledge of the way traditional Native canoes were constructed (this canoe is possibly in the Ojibwa "long nose" style). Seated inside is an apple face doll made of cornhusks, a dried apple head, yarn braids, and dressed in suede clothes with sequins and a beaded necklace. Such apple headed dolls were intended to display artistry rather than to be used as children's toys. The practice of using dried apples as doll heads originated with Native Americans and has been posited as an Iroquois or Seneca creation. Size of canoe: 24" L x 5.5" W x 6" H (61 cm x 14 cm x 15.2 cm)

Provenance: private Alamo, California, USA collection, before 2000
